Tourism is the largest industry in the Dominican Republic and one of the country's key foreign currency earners, with close to US$3 billion in revenue annually. In 2005, tourism accounted for 7% of the country’s gross domestic product. The hotel sector continues to grow, with the Ministry of Tourism reporting that the Dominican Republic (DR) had approximately 55,000 hotel rooms in the country in 2006. Of these, 61% are in large hotels with more than 300 rooms.
