United Technologies Corporation (UTC) Environmental goals were in place from the 1997 to the end of 2006 with an overall objective of aggressively reducing the environmental footprint. UTC also established health & safety and product goals during the period, and recently launched challenging EH&S goals for 2007-2010. UTC made significant progress on all of the 1997-2006 goals. The energy and water goals were set at 40% reduction by 2006, normalized for revenue, and were substantially exceeded with normalized reductions of 56 and 72% respectively, and absolute energy use measured in Btu’s down by 19% worldwide on a company nearly twice the size. Absolute water usage reduction comparably was down 49%, or 1.9 billion gallons annually. These reductions were achieved through a UTC-wide emphasis on doing more with less. The energy savings were not realized from any single project or technology but rather a collection of many specific projects designed to meet the needs of each facility. UTC facilities around the world have reported savings from improvements in manufacturing operations, behavioral modifications, building envelope upgrades, lighting efficiency improvements, HVAC system upgrades and compressed air system improvements. The benefits from energy efficiency improvements and restructuring include GHG emission reductions, energy cost savings, manufacturing process improvements and maintenance savings. All improvements contribute to UTC’s ability to compete in today’s global market. UTC has a disciplined and proven approach to profitability and environmental responsibility.
