Macy’s West

Nomination Carl Burns, Macy’s West

Through his innovativeness Carl Burns redesigned the lighting systems in over 40 newly acquired California and Colorado stores that were part of the Federated/May merger. By doing so he utilized more efficient lamps(Philips Master Color Integrated 25W, Sylvania Dura One, and the Sylvania 47 W Capsylite. In lieu of existing higher wattage, less efficient bulbs and removed all nonessential lights throughout the stores to generate better lighting. The result of his efforts led to a reduction of energy consumption for Macy’s West of 13.6 million kWh/year. In addition to this saving he was able to obtain almost 1/3 of the total project cost in rebate funding from the local utilities serving the locations involved. Carl also carried this program to various Macy’s West stores in Hawaii which generated an additional reduction of over 2.6 million kWh/year.
