Kennecott Land Company

Kennecott Land exists to build enduring communities; these communities are built with VISION. The vision includes traditional neighborhood design with high density mixed use development; allows for transportation alternatives; provides for jobs and economic prosperity; parks and open space; lifelong education opportunities; natural resources conservation; and environmental stewardship. The Daybreak community in South Jordan, Utah is the first testament to that vision.

In order to achieve that vision, Kennecott Land has partnered with a number of home builders. By partnering with us, those home builders must follow our sustainability guidelines. One of those sustainability guidelines is building to Energy Star®.

Every home at Daybreak is built to United States Environmental Protection Agency Energy Star® program specifications. The benefits of owning an Energy Star® home are lower utility costs for the homeowner and a reduction in harmful greenhouse gas emissions to the environment. The average utility savings per household, based on an average 2200 square foot house, is approximately $200-400 annually. There are currently 1002 Energy Star® homes occupied at Daybreak as of February 28, 2007. The resulting energy savings is approximately 9,261,000 kWh per year! Those same homes will contribute less greenhouse gas emission by approximately 3967 metric tons of Carbon Dioxide Equivalent (CDE) annually*. And guess what else? A couple of those builders now only build Energy Star® homes, even outside of Daybreak! Now that’s having an effect on the environment!

Daybreak’s first two commercial buildings are built to LEED standards; our information pavilion and the Daybreak Elementary School and Community Center. Those buildings also utilize a geo heat pump system for their heating in the winter months and cooling in the summer months. The Daybreak Elementary school is in the top five energy saving schools in the Jordan School District!

Daybreak is designed for walk ability, there is at a minimum one park within a five minute walk from every house. There is over 9 million square feet of commercial space planned which means our residents will be able to work, shop and recreate close to home reducing car miles traveled.

Kennecott Land is looking toward the future, a future of continuous improvement. Maximizing energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy is a key component of our sustainable development strategy.
