Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (MEEA)

Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (MEEA) is a unique regional organization, whose mission is to advance energy efficiency for economic development and environmental preservation. MEEA is a leader in raising and sustaining the level of energy efficiency in the Midwest by fostering market penetration of existing energy-efficient technologies and promoting new technologies, products and best practices, including renewable energy.

Through its programs, MEEA has cumulatively saved over 1.3 billion kWh of electricity over the life of the programs which translates to almost 1.9 million tons of CO2 emissions, over 4,500 tons of NOx emissions, over 7,700 tons of SO2 of avoided emissions. MEEA has helped states, utilities, and other interested parties administer efficiency programs across the region. These programs include Change A Light, Change the World, Building Operate Certification, Midwest Building Solutions, Northern Illinois Energy Project, Refrigerator Rebate and Recycling Program, Room Air Conditioner Exchange and Recycling Program, Double Your Savings With ENERGY STAR Clothes Washer Program, Lights for Learning, and Illinois Energy Education Outreach. Examples of our program participants include, but are not limited to: Commonwealth Edison, Xcel Energy, Ameren UE, Indianapolis Power and Light, The Minnesota Department of Commerce, Springfield City Utilities, The Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Ohio Department of Development, Kansas City Power and Light, Alliant Energy, MidAmerican Energy, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. More details about MEEA’s programs and our sponsors can be found on their new website at www.mwalliance.org.

Through its policy work, MEEA has set these goals: to raise awareness of the importance and benefits associated with energy efficiency policies, funding and programs; to increase ratepayer investments for energy efficiency programs across the Midwest states to roughly $1B by 2010; to increase adoption, implementation and enforcement of commercial and residential energy codes and appliance standards in the Midwest. In pursuit of these goals, MEEA has helped to secure adoption and upgrade of building energy codes in Iowa, Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. At the time of this application, MEEA has also helped to increase the level of investments in energy efficiency programs across 9 states from roughly $230M to more than $300M, with additional investments likely as a result of comprehensive energy legislation pending in several states. MEEA has coordinated the Midwest Natural Gas Initiative which seeks to reduce energy consumption by 1% per year for 5 years and states are beginning to meet those goals. In the past several years, MEEA has also helped to raise awareness about energy efficiency by hosting Energy Expos at State Capitols, Tax Incentive Workshops and Leadership Roundtables in MEEA member states.

Organizationally, in six short years, MEEA has grown from 1 staff person and a budget of $75,000 to a robust organization with an annual budget in excess of $6M and a staff of 11 professional employees, a strong and diverse Board of Directors, and a broad cross-section of more than 50 members.
