Killer Watts Get Hot in DC Heat Wave

July 9, 2007—Despite dire forecasts of heat stroke and spontaneous combustion the Alliance to Save Energy Killer Watts turned out en masse for their rematch against the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC).

An error off a shallow drive to the in-field during their debut at bat turned into a home run for NRDC, giving them an early 1-run lead. A double play from tag-team-OUT (Short Aaron Cowper and 1st baseman Cory Wags) brought the Watts in from the field to take their first at-bat.

No sooner had David Mann led-off the Watts’ lineup than he was crossing home plate, batted-in by #2 Watt in the lineup, Emily Curley. Close on David’s heels was # 3 hitter, Matte Elkins, brought home by #5 batter, Sean Garcia.

In this fashion the Watts formed an alternating current around the bases, traversed through their 14-person lineup, and scored the League maximum of 10 runs before NRDC invoked the rarely used and much maligned “Mercy Rule” to end the inning.

Two quick, quiet, and scoreless innings later the Watts were back up and (base) running - making the most of every NRDC-afforded chance they could get to put another 7 runs on the scoreboard, thanks to big swats in the bottom of the 4th by returning Watt veteran Adam Hudson and tech guru Abir Trivedi.

NRDC went on to pull in 2 runs in the 5th and 3 in the 6th but the Watts’ hit machine, outfitted with radial tires, tank treads, and afterburners, chauffeured 2 and then 5 Watts home in the 5th and 6th innings, respectively.

Thusly the Watts, proficiently prolific at-bat and unflagging in their defense were victorious, 25-6 putting the Watts record at 6-4.

Next week the Killer Watts will play the WWF Fighting Pandas, managed by the always garrulous, jovial and sportsmanlike Tobias Swope.

Thank you to everyone who braved the heat and humidity to play. See you next week.
