Killer Watts Bow to Force of Nature (Conservancy)

By Monique Danziger

Their numbers bolstered by newcomers and a returning veteran, and hungry for play after a week’s hiatus, it seemed the Alliance to Save Energy Killer Watts would make short work of The Nature Conservancy (TNC). After all, several of TNC’s players were late, others were decked-out in jeans, and in their last match-up the Watts had bested TNC 16-6.

In this case, though, History passed the final exam, did extra credit assignments and was thus able to avoid repeating itself.

Save a homer in the 3rd to give TNC one run, the first three innings went quick and were mutually unproductive for both teams. The top of the fourth, TNC played matchmaker introducing matchstick to powder keg, and reaped an ensuing explosion of 5 runs to put them 6-0 over the understandably surprised and riled Watts.

The Watts answered with one run, thanks to an error-assisted triple that an enterprising Aaron Cowper made into a home run. Sublimating their frenzied ire into superb fielding, including a beautiful deep-right field snatch by Sean Garcia, the Watts put the TNC away like their winter wardrobe and returned to the plate.

Bottom of the 5th, facing a 7-run deficit, the Watts proceeded to go on a Marine Corp Marathon run with 5 Watts-including Watt newbie John “All You Need is” Love and veteran Lauren DeFrank-crossing the plate to put the score at a hope-inspiring 6-8 at the top of the 5th.

The next 2 innings proved heartbreakingly fruitless for the Watts with their connections at-bat producing pretty, high-soaring, deep-field hits that floated down into the proffered mitts of TNC’s expectant fielders. With the Watts hitmaking machine ground to a halt and TNC managing 1 more run in the 6th the Watts yielded 6-9.

There will not be a game next week due to the Holiday. See you all in 2 weeks. Thank you as always to everyone who came out to play!
