By Monique Danziger Monday, June 11, 2007—The Alliance to Save Energy Killer Watts had the first of their second-round games yesterday with the highly anticipated rematch against the National Environmental Trust Tree Sluggers. Batting first, the Watts ran the bases aggressively, capitalizing on the pervasive propensity of their miscellany of out-field slams, mid-field drives and even a couple of soft, bunt-like infield hits, to drop. This combination of good luck and even better batting advanced the Watts through their 11-person lineup and put 6 runs on the board at the top of the 1st. On defense, the Watts were helmed by pitcher Steve Capanna, the oft-heard, though seldom-seen Bench Coach, who presided over a hungry in-field that ate every Slugger hit that came its way. Shortstop Aaron Cowper and 1st baseman Sean Garcia formed a 2-man cutoff kill zone that kept many a Slugger off 1st, while Emily Curley (who was later named the Tree Sluggers “Player of the Game”), handily manned 3rd base with several beautiful catches. In the outfield, newcomer Jake Repanshek provided key support by turning the popular airspace of deep center-field into a no-fly zone. With a strong 6-run debut, to which the Watts added homeruns in the 2d and 4th innings (David Mann and Repanshek, respectively), a 4-run rally at the top of the 7th and fielding which shut the Sluggers out for 4 innings and down for 3, the Watts were victorious 12-6, earning their 5th win of the season and entering into the second round of league play 5-3. Next week the Watts will face the Fighting Green Weasels. The Weasels are very good, sometimes bellicose and always important to beat. Thank you to everyone who played! See you next week. Correction to 5.29.07 write-up: NET Tree Slugger Erica Peth was mistakenly listed as an intern, she is actually a full time campaign associate at the National Environmental Trust. |
