Killer Watts Send Tree Sluggers to the Sawmill

By Monique "Dr. Perceptive" Danziger

Tuesday, May 29—Armed with a borrowed field permit, the home-team advantage and a thirst for the fizzy potable of redemption, the Alliance to Save Energy played the National Environmental Trust Tree Sluggers under a warm late May sun aside the towering Washington Monument.

With manager Tom Swanson and bench coach John Katz absent and players all around in short supply, the Tree Sluggers were helmed by intern Erica Perth and operating at denigrated capacity.

The Watts, still smarting from last week’s blistering joyride down Loser’s Lane were game-ready and proceeded to shut the Slugger’s offense down for 5 out of 7 innings. Softball newcomer Deli Chen shined in the role of catcher with an out off a popped-up foul in the 3rd, Sean Garcia was crucial in the backfield, stopping several would-be-home-runs and short stop Aaron Cowper adroitly managed the in-field catching everything that was hit his way including several fast and nimble snatches that provoked groans from the other team.

In addition to superlative fielding, the Watts offense was a well-oiled hit-making machine that hit the boards with a bang tallying 5 runs in the 1st inning, 3 in the second and 5 in the 5th thanks to strong batting by the always reliable Queen of the plate Emily Curley as well as Cory Wagner, Matte Elkins and David Mann.

The Watts started strong, stayed hot and never gave the Tree Sluggers much room to manage anything in the way of a comeback after their slow start. By the top of the 7th the score was 13-3 and the Sluggers, retiring from their last at-bat gave up the ghost and the Watts skipped their final at bat deciding that-unlucky omens aside, 13-3 was a satisfactory end to a fantastic game.

The Watts, now 3-2, will play the NRDC Scrub Jays next Monday, June 4th. Thanks again to everyone who played. See you next week!
