Victory is a Many-Splendored Thing

By Monique Danziger

If last week’s game against the Fighting Green Weasels was cold slice of humble pie yesterday’s (May 2, 2007) game against the Nature Conservancy was a sumptuous banquet of delicious triumph.

With the return of Watts’ veterans Justin Fishel, Cory Wagner, Abir Trivedi, the addition of newcomer Zach Lauritzen, and an overall improvement in play TNC was no match for the comeback-primed Killer Watts.

First at-bat the Watts’ got a lucky break when a single turned into a four-run homer thanks to infield errors by TNC short stop and 2d baseman. Outfielder’s Zach Lauritzen, Justin Fishel, Matte Elkins and the wondertwins combination of short stop Aaron Cowper and 1st baseman Cory Wagner made short work of TNC, who retired the field sans runs and looking a trifle nervous.

The next two innings featured easy, high-flying, pop-up balls and competent fielding that ensured that neither team held the bat for very long. The Alliance was shut out in the 2d inning and yielded 1 run with neither team doing much of anything in the third-with the exception of Justin Fishel sprinting from deep left field into center to make a spectacular catch for a key out.

The fourth inning the Watts upped the ante with Elkin’s batting in Fishel and Lauritzen who were strategically placed within home plate’s reach thanks to some aggressive base running. TNC answered with 2 runs of their own bringing the score 6-3.

At the top of the 6th, with the light fading from the sky and the tourist traffic of segways and high school tour groups giving way to drunken throngs of kickball and softball players the Watt’s transmogrified from a team of good softball players enjoying a tenuous lead of 3 runs into a ballsmashing behemoth of epic proportions.

In the 6th Emily Curley got on first thanks to a lucky error then took third through sheer fleet-footed moxie which freed up 2d and 1st bases for Fishel and Cowper who watched anxiously as Lauritzen stepped up to the plate. One soaring home run into deep right field later the Watts were up by 4, soon to be 5. TNC answered with 2 runs of their own to close the 6th.

7th inning looked like it might be the end of the Watts’ run as TNC picked-up 2 quick outs. Yet the Watts’ proved they had some juice left yet with a homerun by Cowper which brought in Aarthi Murty and David Mann. Fishel followed Cowper’s homer with one of his own. TNC took to the plate at the bottom of the 7th with a lot of ground to cover. The Watts’ made sure they never even got the car out of park.

Thus the Killer Watts came back from a most ignoble defeat with a resounding win 16-6 making them 1-1. Next week’s game will be against the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC). Thanks to all who played yesterday as well as to everyone who wishes us luck and cheered us on! See you all next week.
