The Energy Hog Challenge Each student receives an Energy Hog Challenge workbook, and teachers receive the corresponding Teachers Guide which helps them lead students through lessons and classroom activities over a one-week period. Lessons are easily adaptable to classroom curriculum and meet national standards in math, science, history and language arts. The Energy Hog Challenge introduces the topic of energy and includes vocabulary words and discussion topics. The goal is to empower youth to take the lead at home and teach their family to save energy. Homework assignments include the Energy Hog Scavenger Hunt, a student-led home energy audit where children work with their families to investigate and evaluate energy use and waste in their own home, and the Family Pledge which requires students to meet with their family to determine what steps they will take to save energy together. The Energy Hog Traveling Road Show brings energy education into the classroom and makes energy efficiency and conservation fun! Students learn where energy comes from, how we use and waste energy, and why it’s important to save energy. The program is designed for grades 3-6, but may be adapted for younger or older kids. The two part program involves:
Following the classroom lessons, a “real, live Energy Hog” and Hog Buster visit each school, and deliver an energetic and interactive assembly program that brings to life the importance of saving energy. The program reinforces the classroom lessons, and each student is deputized as an Official Energy Hog Buster and empowered to bring their knowledge home to their parents. The Energy Hog brings out the best in kids during a 45-minute memorable presentation about the importance of saving energy.
