An Energy Hog Exclusive Interview

With temperatures across the country slowing sliding downward and the winter heating season rapidly approaching, the infamous supervillian of energy inefficiency, the Energy Hog, has been busy touring the country doing his best (or worst) to educate audiences and raise awareness about the benefits of energy efficiency. We recently caught up with the barnstorming Energy Hog to ask him about his latest road show, the new TV public service announcement, and some tips to save on home energy bills.

Alliance: You’re a hard man…er…Hog to catch up with.

E-Hog: Gotta be on the go. Tis the season to waste energy. People don’t realize how easy it is for cold air to sneak in through leaky windows and doors or poor insulation in attics and basements. And once the Hog gets inside, he can gobble up energy faster than you can eat Thanksgiving turkey.

Alliance: Well, tell us a few of the places you’ve been this Fall.

E-Hog: Let’s see. In August I was in Topeka, Kansas at a back-to-school fair, then I went to New York for an EPA federal employee fair. After that I was on NBC in Columbus, Ohio trying to convince viewers NOT to go to Energyhog.org to learn about ways to save energy and money in their home. Then I met with Rhode Island Governor Donald L. Carcieri. He’s a swell guy. In October I was in Atlanta, Mississippi, Virginia, and then back to Kansas.

Alliance: That sure is a lot of ground to cover in just two months. How many people would you say you’ve reached on this road trip?

E-Hog: Including my appearance on Channel 10 in Columbus, I’m told it was more than 70,000 people.

Alliance: Wow. And what exactly have you been doing on this cross country tour?

E-Hog: Basically trying not to promote the benefits of energy efficiency and conservation. It’s surprising how many kids and families are unaware of how much they can save by using Energy Star appliances, installing low-e windows, adding insulation and buying compact fluorescent light bulbs. People just waste and waste, letting energy hogs like me live the good life right under their noses.

Alliance: I hear you’re a big hit with the kids, especially since your new TV public service announcement hit the airwaves.

E-Hog: Yes, that’s true. The Energy Hog is everywhere. From Alabama to Iowa, I’m on over 4,000 billboards, bus shelters and phone booths. Then there’s TV and radio. Since starting this campaign over 2 years ago, I’ve gotten over $90 million in donated ad time. And personally, I’ve been all over the country at town fairs and events, meeting with millions of people to spread the message.

Alliance: So how do people who want to know more about the Energy Hog and your activities get involved?

E-Hog: Now’s their chance. If you want to join the Energy Hog campaign we still have partnership opportunities available. I’ve got all kinds of partners including the U.S. Department of Energy, The Home Depot, the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association, 20 state energy offices and the Ad Council.
