California Green Campus Universities Win Higher Education Energy Efficiency Best Practices Awards

Two Green Campus universities: Humboldt State University and University of California, Berkeley received last year’s Higher Education Energy Efficiency Best Practices Awards in the category of Student Energy Conservation in the CSU and UC grouping respectively.

Humboldt State University Green Campus interns co-wrote, co-directed, co-produced and co-starred in an educational film, “Green Eye for the Conventional Gal.” The film is based on the television series “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.” In it, a group of environmentalists with different areas of expertise (e.g. “energy guy,” played by Green Campus intern Patrick McAuley) teach an ordinary student how to live a more sustainable life by eating, dressing, and using energy in a more responsible fashion. Green Eye was just one of the Humboldt State Green Campus program’s many projects; interns also created and facilitated a one-credit project-based class through which they ran a pilot residence hall energy competition and retrofit a dorm room. For their efforts, HSU Green Campus interns received the CSU Higher Education Energy Efficiency Best Practices Award in the category of Student Energy Conservation.

UC Berkeley Green Campus interns created and facilitated a one-credit class, “Energy 101.” Through Energy 101, about forty students toured an on-campus PV-array and co-generation plant, listed to a variety of guest lecturers from the university and the community, and learned to conduct basic energy audits. Students conducted practice audits on their own apartments in preparation for course’s final project, when they were divided into teams and assigned one of twelve campus buildings to audit. Students reported to the appropriate building managers with the results of their audits and recommendations on how those building managers may improve the energy performance of their buildings.

Along with Energy 101, Berkeley interns also conducted a light-bulb swap – during which they exchanged about 1,500 compact fluorescent lamps for incandescent light bulbs – and held a residence hall energy competition. Through these efforts, as well as numerous smaller-scale campaigns, Green Campus reduced energy use in Berkeley residence halls by an estimated 7%. In recognition of their hard work, the UC Berkeley Green Campus interns received the UC Higher Education Energy Efficiency Best Practices Award in the category of Student Energy Conservation.
