BC Hydro’s primary business activities are the generation and distribution of electricity. As one of the largest electric utilities in Canada, BC Hydro serves more than 1.6 million customers in an area containing over 94 per cent of British Columbia’s population, where it endeavors to balance energy needs with environmental concerns. It’s hydroelectric system of close to 11,500 megawatts of generating capacity – over 87% of which is hydroelectric – yields some of the lowest electricity rates in the world. Through its wholly owned power marketing subsidiary, Powerex, BC Hydro is extensively involved in energy trade outside the province. The company is confident that current major initiatives will enable continued performance across all three measures of sustainability: economic, social, and environmental – BC Hydro’s "Triple Bottom Line."
BC Hydro’s stated business objectives include ranking among the top 25% of North American energy companies in terms of sustainability performance, based on its hydroelectric generating facilities, and building an energy portfolio with clean and green resource components – both by acquiring energy from independent power producers, and by creating market-driven demand for additional green electricity generation.
