PHILADELPHIA PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM Began Green Schools: Fall, 2000 Earth Apple Awards 2002 2nd Place, Elementary Schools Shawmont's Green Schools team developed a plan based on recycling and energy awareness featuring the three R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Blue cans were placed throughout the school to collect recyclable materials. Students showed their artistic talents by reading and writing poems about energy, and making posters to support the school's recycling efforts. The team also formed a "paper patrol" to support this recycling campaign and an "Energy Patrol" to monitor lights and electrical equipment making sure they are turned off when not in use. Teams of 7th, 3rd, and 2nd graders used a checklist to monitor energy use and paper recycling in classrooms over the school year and plan to use this data for comparisons in the future. In addition, a group of kindergarteners checked the auditorium daily, closing the light circuit when needed. Lessons on the water cycle and air and water pollution have helped students realize the relationship between energy use and the environment. Students visited the Schuykill Nature Center to learn about different habitats and how the creatures that live there depend on conservation to survive. These lessons have been a wonderful complement to the Green Schools energy component. Best of all, teachers and students hope to extend their conservation campaigns to student homes to get parents involved in recycling and saving energy. Shawmont’s energy efficiency efforts saved 92,181 kWh, reflecting a savings of 28% over a 9-month period.
