Energy Counter Sources

The Alliance "Energy Counter" represents an estimate of second-by-second energy consumption and is intended merely to demonstrate the rate at which oil is consumed. Statistics for the "Energy Counter" above and the text on the previous page come from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) of the Department of Energy. The rolling energy count is based on an annual figure for BTU consumption taken from the EIA's International Energy Annual and then converted to equivalent oil barrels at a rate of 5.8 million BTUs per oil barrel. Figures for the rate of increase in carbon emissions and the Persian Gulf's share of the world oil market on the previous page come from projections made in the EIA's Energy Outlook 2003.
