What types of energy efficiency projects does the Alliance lead?
Our expert staff and our hands-on consultants in the field do all sorts of projects to help a wide array of people save energy. Our education staff members teach students how to check their schools for heat-leaking cracks; our international team shows leaders in rural Africa how to transfer water from the coast to remote villages without losing precious drops along the way; and our industry experts provide manufacturing plant owners with the information they need to become more energy efficient.
Where does the Alliance carry out its projects?
The Alliance’s policy and grassroots work is focused in the United States, where we advocate for energy efficiency policy on Capitol Hill, as well as with state governments, local municipalities, and community leaders. The Alliance has carried out international programs in every key energy sector, supported by its offices in Armenia, India, Mexico, South Africa and Ukraine, and has experience in 30 other countries.
What is the Alliance doing to save energy itself?
Practicing what it preaches, the Alliance in July 1996 established an energy-efficient headquarters in the nation’s capital that was 50 percent more efficient than the typical office suite and showcased the latest lighting and other advanced technologies.
In July 2006, the Alliance moved to an office with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Commercial Interiors (LEED-CI) Silver certification, a designation of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Working extensively with builders, engineers, architects and Associates, the Alliance designed and remodeled the new office space to meet the stringent LEED-CI requirements. This included installing an integrated system of energy-efficient lighting hardware and software, optimizing the HVAC distribution system, purchasing materials with recycled content and extensively re-using furnishings and materials.
The Alliance received the LEED-CI certification in February 2008. Check out our virtual office tour.
